The community events are part of Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Week, the joint campaign from NHS England and Diabetes UK taking place from 20-24 May.

The campaign aims to raise awareness of the risk of type 2 diabetes and how to avoid it. It will encourage the public to check their risk via the Know Your Risk tool.

There are 13.6 million people in the UK at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. But for many people there are steps to take to reduce the risk. A free, simple and potentially life-saving assessment to better understand individual risk of type 2 diabetes can be carried out, using the Know Your Tool for example. This will be on offer as well as other health checks at the events on the day.

Claire Kavanagh of Xyla Health said: “If someone is at moderate to high risk, the tool will advise them to contact their GP practice for a blood test. If their blood sugar levels show they’re at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, then they may be eligible for referral to their local Healthier You NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme.

“Our Healthier You groups for the evidence-based lifestyle change programme which helps people at risk of type 2 diabetes to reduce their risk through managing their weight, eating more healthily and being more physically active are running well across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.”

The campaign encourages healthcare professionals to refer eligible people to the Healthier You NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme.

Claire added: “We are reaching out to the public in events at a city supermarket and neighbourhood care home. The aim is to raise awareness of the risk of type 2 diabetes and how to avoid it. We will offer to check your risk of developing type 2 diabetes and more advice on diabetes will also be available.

“Please come and chat and get the free Health Check and embrace a Healthier You. Events are kindly being hosted by Portsdown View Care Home and Tesco Extra at Fratton Park. Thanks to the many collaborators for helping and supporting these events.”
